The Chicago White Sox announced the same day that they activated Hendricks from the 15-day disabled list. The White Sox will host the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 30.
Hendricks previously announced in early January that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The disease is a type of blood cancer that occurs when lymphoid tissue cells turn malignant.
The Chicago White Sox organization later announced on March 21 that Hendricks had been declared cancer-free. Hendricks also announced that he was free of the disease.
After being declared cancer-free, Hendricks immediately began preparing for his return. Since his injury was not pitching-related, his return to action was very quick.
Hendricks recently pitched six games at Triple-A to get his feet wet before returning to the majors today.
Hendricks, a 13-year major leaguer, pitched 57 2/3 innings in 58 games last season, going 4-4 with a 2.81 ERA. He struck out 85 batters.
Hendricks is a right-handed reliever who throws a four-seam fastball that averages 97.8 mph. His four-seam fastball has a command rate of over 60%. He also throws a slider and a curveball.
